Bats, especially bats in your attic, can cause severe damage once they get inside and makes themselves at home. Soon the contaminated materials host bacteria, viruses, and even bat mites, leading to an unhealthy environment that can pass diseases onto you, your loved ones, and your pets.

Step 1: One Of Our Bat Removal Experts Does A Thorough Assessment Inside And Outside Your Building And Then Lays Out A Project Plan

Before any bat removal work starts, we must perform a thorough assessment of your home or business outside and inside so we can adequately solve your pest bat troubles. You’ll first want to know the number of bats in your building, which could be just a few or worse an entire bat colony and the bat entry points on your building. Our certified and experienced Ostrander Bat Team will locate every bat entry gap, demanding a bat master’s eye since a bat can enter an opening as small as a dime- yes, a dime!. Once our bat expert has documented how bats enter your structure, they locate the roosting bat location and the extent of damage caused by the bats. To help you fully understand the bat inspection process, let’s clarify the steps :

  • We find where the bat hideouts are, how many bats and the species, and whether you have a maternity colony.
  • Our Ostrander bat cleanup specialists we’ll determine the scope of bat damage and contamination.
  • Next, we discover every place bats access your home or commercial business.
  • An Ostrander bat professional plans a program, and a timetable for the bat exclusion.
  • An Ostrander bat specialist sits with you, describes what we found, share photos, explain the issues and the scope of costs, provides a time frame to finish the work, make accommodations, and then have you sign a contract.

Step 2:  We’ll Explain How We Remove Bats From Your Home Or Business

Bat removal is as much an art as a skill, but the proper tools and years of on-the-ground experience make our bat exclusion process smooth as silk in almost every instance. Some people think we use tools like bat nets, or we pull them out with our hands one by one. But, that would take much too long, increase the probability of harming the bats, and increase your costs. So let’s clarify the proper bat removal process:

Of course, if you have bats, bats have to enter your buildings somehow, and we suspect you didn’t bring them in as pets. Bats move into your structure via openings outside the building. Generally, these openings are tiny, no bigger than a dime, and someone inexperienced in bat removal would not see such small gaps. Noticing these small gaps is essential for ensuring bats do not return!

Every one of our Ostrander bat technicians has the experience, and of course, eyesight, to uncover every hole. Once discovered, we fix and seal those gaps, but we must leave a few unsealed openings. We mount unique One-Way Bat Valves on these unsealed bat entry points, which allow bats to escape but not return. Based on the location and type of gap, we have three Bat Valve models, where one will fit best in the situation.

Bats generally leave their roost at night in search of food. But since not every bat leaves the roost each night, the One-Way Bat Valves must remain on the building for days, from 5 to 7, before being removed and gaps fixed and sealed.

While the Bat Valves remain on your home or business, we monitor them often by a remote camera, assuring us that no bats become tangled in the Bat Valve, which usually never happens. Once bat activity via the Bat Valves stops, we check the building for bats, and if no bats remain, we remove the valves, then fix and seal the bat valve openings. Then it’s on to the last step!

Our Ostrander Bat Removal expert is installing the Bat Valve SG3 used for Soffit Returns, Gable Vents, and more.

Repairing and sealing bat entry points is a must but we always leave one or two. On those unsealed gaps, we screw in a One-Way Bat Valve like the model TBV-SG3 which bats can exit but not return.

Our Ostrander Bat Removal expert installed the Bat Valve TBV-FR4 used for Ridge Vents And Frieze Board Gaps.

In the above example, we use the Bat Valve model TBV-FR4 developed for attaching to Ridge Vents And Frieze Board Gaps.

Our Ostrander Bat Removal pro installed the Bat Valve TBV-FLEX2 used for Corner Gaps And Are Versatile And Flexible.

Our Ostrander bat experts used Bat Valve model TBV FLEX 2 on this corner gap given this model’s elasticity and versatility.

Step 3: The Dirty Part Of Bat Exclusion – Bat Guano And Contaminated Material Cleanup, Sanitizing, and Deodorizing

Fortunately, unlike pesky squirrels and raccoons, bats don’t bite into and remove wood from floors and walls, gnaw through metal, rip open vent coverings open, or turn attic insulation into nests. Since bats only need to get through 18 mm gaps in your roof, soffits, fascia, they don’t have to do any damage getting inside. But once inside and doing their upside-down bat hanging, they do a great deal of pooping and peeing, and they also poop and pee while in flight. So here are some of the issues you and we face.

  1. Bat feces can grow a fungus that spreads a disease called Histoplasmosis. When bat guano dries, it can form dust that moves into the air in your living quarters.
  2. Also, most people don’t know bats have mites called “bat bugs or “bat mites which can spread into your living space where they flourish by sucking human and pet blood.
  3. Bat urine and feces get absorbed into the wood flooring and sheetrock, and leak through flooring gaps and onto the wall and ceiling in the living space below.
  4. Furthermore, bat urine and feces soak into attic insulation, contaminating it. The urine-soaked insulation loses its R-Value efficiency hence increasing your energy costs.
  5. Last but not least, bat urine and feces produce a nasty odor in the air and permeate all materials in the vicinity.

At this stage of the bat exclusion project, we eliminate bat mites if they exist, remove and replace ruined sheetrock, wood, soiled insulation, and all bat guano.

In the bat infestation was extensive, and a great deal of contamination resulted, you may need a full attic restoration, which means:

  1. We vacuum out and remove all contaminated insulation and materials.
  2. Cleanse and decontaminate all surfaces in the area
  3. We spread a safe, biodegradable mist that permanently removes all odors, leaving every object in the place with a fresh scent and breathable healthful air.
  4. Next, we blow in a thick coating of high-quality R-Factor insulation, creating better heating and cooling efficiency.

Some F.A.Q.’S Our Staff Hears And Explains

There are so many questions we get regarding bats and the bat exclusion process we could go on for an entre page but we don’t want to bore you to sleep so here are a few.

The bat eclusion process seems so complicated isn't there a simple way?

No, not really, unless you want to try this yourself, which we would not recommend. Proper bat exclusion takes time, knowledge, patience and years of experience.

We want to poisin bats in our attic. What poison do you recommend?

We don’t recommend poison! It’s inhumane, unethical, and against Ohio law to poison these fantastic flying mammals! Plus, bats are vital to the health of our ecosystem and the best natural mosquito catchers in Ohio.

Will we have to leave our home when you do a bat exclsuion?
Our bat exclusion process is safe at every step for us, you, and the bats. We never use toxic chemicals, and our cleaning process gets isolated from any living quarters. You can stay in your home while our bat exclusion experts perform their work.
How many babies does a female bat have?

Female bats have one pup at a time and are highly devoted mothers while they suckle their babies. Baby bats stay with their mothers for about 3 – 4 weeks after birth.
